Dear Mr. Schiff,
I was most glad to hear from you. I have just received your letter & its useful enclosure for which many thanks. I say I was most glad – but that is not quite true – your letter is two letters. I did not get your letter in France & I often wondered about you, but things are so tumultuous & disturbing that unless one has everything handy, like an addressed envelope, a pencil & a moment to spare one cannot write letters. Ones envelopes get stuck and useless with the damp & you cannot replace them. I managed to jot down some ideas for poems now & then but I won’t send them to you because they are actual transcripts of the battlefield & you won’t like that, anyway just now. I do hope you have exaggerated your feelings & are not so low in spirits as your letter makes out. We manage to keep cheerful out there
