| Description | The Horseshoe is the original campus of South Carolina College, now the University of South Carolina. The College was established in 1801 and opened in 1805, with Rutledge College as the first building. The Horseshoe is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The area was enclosed by a brick wall with a center entrance in 1835, which helped protect the college from the fire that destroyed much of Columbia in 1865. The center portion of the brick wall facing Sumter Street was lowered and topped with an iron fence in 1883. Two off-center gates replaced the single center gate in 1898, developing the horseshoe-shaped drive. The Horseshoe and Longstreet Theater served as the entire campus until new construction projects began in 1909. Beginning in 1972, the Horseshoe bulidings underwent an extensive restoration project. |
